FAQ: I am processing a payroll for paying out sick leave in Missouri, and I’m getting a variance when balancing; what’s wrong?
In Missouri, when paying out unused leave at the end of the fiscal year for a certified employee who is exempt from Social Security, the deductions in the Cross References List (in the Pay Period Entries batch) are unselected. After calculating a Payroll and when completing the Balancing Information option, the View Data tab will show a variance for the Social Security Gross (see diagram below). This is because the Retirement deduction was not calculated as part of the leave that is being paid out and so the Exempt from Social Security field is not applicable. To verify, click the Show Details button to the right of the variance field and confirm the Calculated Social Security Gross column equals the Variance column; if the amounts equal, the variance can be ignored and you can continue to complete the payroll.
