FAQ: A message for copying a tax (WC or SUTA) appears when calculating the new year’s payroll; why?

I am calculating payroll for the new calendar year and am receiving the messages below; why?

WC – The 2023 Rates Were Copied to 2024 as the Tax Tables for (applicable state) Workers Comp for 2024 Were Not Found – Verify Tax Rates in Tax File

SUTA – The 2023 Rates Were Copied to 2024 as the Tax Tables for (applicable state) Unemployment for 2024 Were Not Found – Verify Tax Rates in Tax File

The messages are informational and indicate that the specified taxes (Workers Comp or SUTA) did not have a new rate set up for the 2024 calendar year and so the 2023 rates were copied to the new year.

To verify the new rates, complete the following:

  • In Payroll, select the Maintenance menu and then Taxes.
  • Bring up the tax to verify.
  • Click the Tax Table tab.
  • Enter 2024 in the Tax Year field.
  • Make any changes to the rates if needed and then click the Save button.

Note:  The informational messages may appear for any tax, including one that is no longer being used or is inactive, if there are employees that have the tax set up on the Taxes screen in the Employee File.
